New Year’s Eve at Seichoji Temple, “Mizugyo Ritual”
Each year on December 31st at 23:30, the monks of Seichoji Temple splash their bare skin with water and chant in prayer as they preform the “Mizugyo Ritual.”
Following the ritual at 23:40, the temple bell is rung 108 times to welcome the New Year.
The bell at Tanjoji Temple, a 1-minute walk from our accommodations, begins ringing at 23:30.
During New Year’s Eve, temple bells can be heard ringing across Japan. Don’t miss out on the many special events held this time of year.
